Eventually, youll learn the true meaning of IHTFP. MIT can be a wonderful or awful place depending on how you decide itll be. Heres just some things to keep in mind as you brave through your first semester here: Keep an open mind. There are some things that you hear before you come to MIT, and even while youre here, that might influence how you perceive things at the Tute. I remember as a freshmen hearing the stereotypes about dorms and greek life, and letting them initially prevent me from making my own decisions about different things on campus. But having been here for a year, you realize that theres always exceptions to the stereotype, and that things you never thought youd like are actually quite likeable. For that reason, keep an open mind. Youll never know what new opportunities might come out of the new things you try and the people you meet. Take care of yourself Sleep. Eat. Exercise. Its easy to let your health slip, especially when its snowing outside and youre stressed about all the work you have due the next week. Dont fall into the pithole though! Your health should be your first priority. If youre not feeling well, youre probably not going to be able to work your best anyways. So if youre tired, dont be afraid to take a nap (theyll become your new favorite pastime). If youre sick, dont be afraid to head over to MIT Medical or your floors MedLink. If youre feeling stressed, take a walk along the Charles or run at the Z center. Youll find youll be much happier if you take care of yourself during your time here.Dont forget to mentally take care of yourself either! By this I mean, make time for yourself. Whether its an hour bridge loop run, painting a picture, or playing your favorite instrument, make sure you have time to decompress. You time is never a waste of time. Youre not alone! During the thick of things, its easy to fall behind. But the important thing to remember is dont be afraid to ask for help. Often times, youll find that youre not the only one confused about specific topics.I remember my Spring semester, I struggled quite a bit. I took on a little too much, and because of all my commitments, I actually failed my first 5.111 test. But after I made it past all my emotions, I realized I needed to actually take action to fix my fifth week flag. I ended up scheduling an appointment with my TA to go over my test, and I found it was pretty helpful. I realized I didnt have a solid understanding on certain topics, which combined with some silly mistakes, resulted in a poor test grade. It happens. As the semester went on, I participated more in recitation and made sure to ask questions, and at the end of the semester, I actually ended up acing the class. Just goes to show you that you can  finish strong even if you struggle at first. Moral of the story is that MITs a challenging place, but youre never alone if you need help. All you need to do is ask.  Dont be afraid to seek help from your TA, your GRT, or your roommate. Dont forget that office hours and S^3 are a good resource. Most importantly though, dont be afraid to admit that you need help. Its something that a many people here, myself included, struggle with sometimes. But often times, youll save yourself a lot of stress and time if you just talk to someone! Do what you love. I cant stress how important this is. MIT has many activities that you can get yourself involved in. Youll find that here, time will become your most precious commodity. For that reason, find what you really love to do and commit the free time you do have to it. If you really love the activity, youll get a lot more out of it and find an awesome community. On the other hand, if you dont really enjoy it, try something else! Theres lots of choices here, so dont settle for second best. Its all about finding what you like. 3 Ways to Become a Better Writer... No its not hopeless! The Dershowitz Dilemma An article in the July/Aug 2012 Yale Alumni Magazine listed some famous Yale graduates’ favorite classes and the stories behind them. In one vignette, Alan Dershowitz, Yale ‘62LLB, Attorney, Harvard law professor and best-selling author, told a surprising (and very well-written) tale (The Class Ill Never Forget): In his first-year Torts class, Dershowitz received a dreaded D on his first written assignment. His Professor, Guido Calabresi, wrote a comment implying that Mr. Dershowitz, though a sound thinker, might not be suited to the practice of law due to his sub-par writing ability. The problem, as Calabresi stated it, was that Dershowitz wrote as if he were â€Å"having a conversation with [his] friends in Brooklyn.† The professor worked all semester to step Dershowitz’s writing up to an acceptable level. Apparently it worked. Will you ever learn? Dershowitz is not the only writer capable of being trained. For many years, for instance, I have been editing my mother’s New Year’s letter. It used to take a lot of work and a lot of verbal wrestling with Mom. Nowadays, I breeze through in a few minutes with very little to suggest. Mom learned too! She is now one of my sharpest editors. She can merely attest to an occasional feeling of affection: â€Å"And yet she loved him, sometimes† (15). In â€Å"To my Dear and Loving Husband†, a love poem, dedicated to her husband, â€Å"Anne conveys how much she loves her husband, and that she values her love of her husband more than money; more than anything anyone can imagine† (5-6) . In â€Å"Story of an Hour†, Louise Mallard learns about a railroad disaster from her sister and her husband’s friend Richard. Brently Mallards name leads the list of those â€Å"killed† (1). At first she weeps in her sisters arms. However, she soon begins to recognize a different sensation. â€Å"A whispered word escapes her slightly parted lips. Under her breath she was says: Free, free, free† (11). This tells us that she is indeed free from the marriage that has kept her repressed. At the same time, love brings on more meaning in â€Å"To My Dear and Loving Husband†. Anne states, â€Å"I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold, Or all the riches that the East doth hold† (5-6). This tells us that she values their love very much; more than anything money could buy. She does not care how rich the people in the East are; she already feels rich because of the love that she and her husband share. Anne conveys that she is a happy wife because he has given her all her happiness as indicated in the line â€Å"If ever wife was happy in man, Compare with me, ye woman if can† (4). Clearly, she is proud of the love she and her husband have for each other. Both women eventually experience love to the death, both physically and mentally. In â€Å"To My Dear and Loving Husband†, Anne strongly believes that their love can be preserved; that it will last forever. In the last line of the poem, â€Å"Then while we live, in love let’s so preserver, Then when we live no more, we may live ever† (10-11). Anne is speaking from her point of view. She believe that even if one day, that they are dead, their love will still live on forever. In the â€Å"Story of an Hour†, Louise Mallard’s husband shows up at the door of their house and she realizes that her husband was never on the train. Her heart gives out suddenly; ironically given by the doctor attribute this to â€Å"the joy that kills† (23). In both pieces of writing, each character had experiences more or less love in a different way. One man disallows his wife to unable to make her own life decisions; the other stands by his wife with unconditional love. In Louise’s case, she experiences real freedom during the absence of her husband’s domination. Even if it was a short hour, it was the time when all her dreams came true. I believe that Mrs. Mallard’s death was not only because she was shocked to see her husband, but because she was sad about the loss of her new-found freedom. In Anne’s case, she is enjoying her relationship with her husband, as her husband is the kind of man that treasures his wife. The story and poem both discuss love. The poem tells us that some people view love so strongly, that they truly believe in eternal love, that their love will continue even after they die. In the story, the husband and wife do not have enough love between one another: one is giving and the other is taking. Therefore that kind of love does not last eternally. It is the love demonstrated in â€Å"To my Dear and Loving Husband† that is the cornerstone for every marriage; true love operates both directions.
